One of the saddest things I see is women who are losing their hair. Not just the thinning hair because of old age but the “going bald” because of their thyroid issues. It might be vane on my part but I’ve found that by changing my diet and adding supplements, I’m having success growing hair back with hypothyroidism!
I can see new growth at the hairline on my forehead and my eyebrows, which up until about six months ago only went to the midway point of my eye, have grown back in. Not that I have bushy eyebrows now, but, hey some hair is better than no hair.
Apparently hair is mostly protein…
Hair is made of protein. All basic nutrients contribute to keeping us whole and healthy, but protein provides the building blocks that allow us to repair, replace, or grow bones, skin, muscles, and hair. Although we tend to think of dietary protein as coming from steak, fish, chicken, and other meats, it is also found in eggs, legumes (such as starchy beans and lentils), dairy products, soy foods, and — in smaller amounts — some whole grains and vegetables. People who don’t get enough protein in their diets, such as those with anorexia nervosa or who follow any extreme weight-loss diet, will slow the rate of new hair growth. As hair is naturally shed, it won’t grow back as quickly. With enough hair loss, the scalp will start to show through. Starvation also depletes the body of other nutrients important for hair growth and quality. And over the long term, starvation and extreme weight loss will lead to a reduction in hormone production, which can also lead to thinning hair.
Did you catch that part about reduction in hormone production? That is where hypothyroidism comes in. Many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism can be treated in natural and holistic ways.
While looking into why my hair is growing back I stumbled upon this bit of information:
The symptoms of progesterone deficiency and hypothyroidism can be very similar. Being premenopausal, we know that her estrogen production was sufficient (if you are menstruating you have adequate estrogen). Because she still had regular periods, her doctor, like so many others, did not feel the need to test her progesterone level. He assumed that, despite her normal T3 and T4 levels, her fatigue and low basal temperature indicated hypothyroidism. What he did not know that progesterone is anabolic (burns fat) and thermogenic (increases temperature) so that a deficiency causes weight gain and low temperature. He simply did not consider the possibility of progesterone deficiency [what your dr may not be telling you]
In case you didn’t know, I’m post menopausal. I’ve never taken any medications to counter hot flashes, or increase hormones. What I have done though, is to change my diet. Where before I didn’t pay much attention to what I ate or drank, now I’m pretty cognizant of what I consume.
Things that can cause hair loss in addition to being hypothyroid:
- Hair dryers
- Diet and dieting
- Fungal Infections

Eat farm fresh eggs, and walnuts. When you eat meat it is best to stick with local raised beef and chicken.
Take time to enjoy life, don’t worry about stuff you can’t do anything about.
